How to Look For Age Discrimination
No matter if you are working at a company, or
you are looking for another position you want to see if you may have been
turned down because of age discrimination. As always you need to do research
before you come to that conclusion. If you’re over 40 you need to ask yourself these questions?
1. Have you been passed over for
promotion, or for other internal positions? Are other people who work with you making comments about your age such as “Need Fresh Blood”?
2. Have you noticed that younger people are starting with the company than people your age?
3. Do your internal postings for jobs say Recent College Graduates, or New College Graduate, or if you’re in other
countries Freshers?
4. Did your performance review take a sudden turn to the worst even though last year you had a great review? Did other people who were younger on your team
who did less get higher performance ratings?
5. If there was a layoff “getting rid of multiple people” were they mostly people older than 40 years of age?
If the answer to these questions was yes then
there is a very good possibility that you may be a victim of Age Discrimination.
If your applying for a job at another company?
1. Make sure that your resume does not hint to the prospective employer that you are over 40,or mention your age.
2. Does a job advertisement say that they want someone with a experience range? If this is the case then there is a possibility that they may not want someone with too much experience. This could be an indication of possible age discrimination. Make sure that your s skills
are relevant when you apply for that job so that at least you can get your foot in the door and maybe sell them on yourself.
3. Take a look at their website andsee what type of people that they have in on website. Take a look at some of the activities they are describing on the website. Are they young, or are there some pictures
of workers who are older. This will give you a idea on what type of people that are working at the company.
4. You can start experiencing age discrimination in the high tech industry as young as 35.
If your in another country please
investigate the age discrimination laws in your country. If you have any other questions take a look at some of the goverment websites in your country, or seek legal advise from your legal representative..
