Some countries call it a resume others call it a CV Curriculum Vitae  Latin for 'life story' , but what ever you call it the object of having a resume is to tell someone about yourself in order to get a job. Writing a good resume can make the difference between getting a job, or not getting a job. It can also determine how much you make and the position you have. There are many secrets and pitfalls in writing a good resume and I hope to explain to the job applicant out there the best way to write your resume.  It is not difficult, but you have to be good at detail, and also are realistic. It is never good to be dishonest, but it is never good to be totally honest either. Businesses are out for themselves to make a profit and to get the best person for the job, and the applicant has to be out for himself to find the best job that pays the most and will be a good fit for the applicant’s goals. I call this MSI or Mutual Self Interest in which both parties are looking after their best interest.  So the best way to get around this issue is to write a resume that fits the type of job you are looking for and writing it based on your best interest. There are many barriers when an potential employee applies for a job the trick is to find ways around those obstacles.
           A resume has several parts to it. A cover letter is a letter of introduction. This is the part of the resume in which you have a chance to sell yourself.  The cover letter should be relatively short one page max. It should have your contact information and be to the point. The contact letter should be designed to match the position in which you are applying for. You should not have a cover letter designed for a technical job if you applying for a teaching position.  The amount of information in your cover letter should the minimum amount of information needed to sell yourself.  The cover letter should have key words or what I call power words to grab the attention of the potential employer and to show the employer that you have some knowledge of the field in which you are applying for. I will explain some of those key words and give examples of some of those words later in the technical sections of this website. Make sure also that you speak about your previous position and experience and your desire for the position you are applying for. Don’t over sell yourself because that can work against you. Always have your contact information somewhere in the cover letter.


CONTACT INFORMATION AT TOP OF PAGE

After the cover letter on a separate page you should have the main body of the resume. Your contact information should be on this page. Ideally it should be at the top of the first page of the resume. Always make sure that you are using a font size and type that us not unique. For example I would use Times New Roman, or Arial size at least 10 to a size that corresponds to the amount of information on your page. If possible and if you feel it looks good make it bold. This will  catch the eye of the interviewer.

 

OBJECTIVE

This is where you put your objective. It should always be related to the job that you are applying for. If you put in the objective that you are looking for a position as a CPA and your applying for a teacher job this would be surefire way of not getting that job. So you must always put a objective a position that is related to the position you are looking for.  An example would be the following that would be used for applying for a position within a large computer company.

Seeking a professional Quality Assurance,  CE, Data Analyst,  or Project Management position providing an opportunity to improve the systems and operations of a growing company.

   This objective would cover Quality Assurance, Data Analyses, and Project Management all important positions within this company. All the positions require similar skills but present you as being flexible to other positions that might be available. Never ever put one position as the objective.

A second example would be the following position as a teacher.

Elementary School Teacher - Regular / ESL / Kindergarten / Pre-K

   This teacher has several certifications, however to avoid missing out on other possible positions at the school she adds that she would also accept a position  as a ESL teacher, a Pre-K teacher, or any possible 1-5 elementary school positions that might be available. One more advantage to having this type of objective is that you have fewer changes you have to make for each position your applying for.

 

SUMMARY

The summary section is the section of the resume that highlights your general qualifications with hard hitting points with keywords. It must reflect your true expertise because generally your potential employer will ask you question based on these qualifications.  Make sure it is bulleted to keep it neat. Below is an example for the summary section for a IT professional.

  • Professional experience in positions as Senior Consultant QA, Software Engineer, Quality  Assurance, and Technical Support.
  • Skilled in quality assurance, stress testing, troubleshooting, process development, technical support,  documentation, Project Management,  internal  control procedures, system and program security, systems analysis,  methodology development, hardware and software installation.
  • Experienced in fostering and developing client relations, providing end user training and  innovative technical solutions, conducting software demonstrations, and increasing efficiency to enhance profitability.
  • Leadership skills include ability to lead and motivate co-workers from all backgrounds, creative problem solving and solution-oriented work style, decisive and confident decision making, and in-depth proficiency with new technology trends.
  • Well-developed communication skills, documented writing and editing talents, ability to work well independently and as part of a team, developing effective client relations, providing superior client service and satisfaction.  Strong customer service and follow-up skills   

TECHNICAL SKILLS

These are the technical skills related to your job.If it is a computer or programming related job this section would show your technical skills such as programming languages. Make sure that you put on your resume the more up to date skills since this will give you more of a chance that your resume will be noticed and increase your chances of getting a job. If you’re a older tech worker it will help you also to get you past the first hurdle which is age discrimination which will be discussed later in this website.

 

EXPERIENCE

What is your relevant experience as far as this job is concern. Make sure that you put this in order of time from the latest time period to the earliest time period. Make simple explanations of the type of duties that you did. Only go back a period of ten years if you can to avoid possible age discrimination.

 

OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE

This is other non relevant experience that may not help you directly  get a job. Working at a non technical part time job when you are trying to get a full time technical job would be one example. You would put that job description and time frame in this section. You want to emphasize  your experience with the job you are applying for. This section will help you put forth to the potential employer your relevant experience, and show your stability as a employee..

 

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

This section is for your educational background.  If you have a college education no need to put your high school information in here since for older employees this could be used to target workers for age discrimination.  If you have a master’s degree it may or may not help you to put that in here unless that job is truly for a person with a master’s degree. The reason is that if the employer may be under the false impression that you might get bored with the job or cost more than a normal applicant for that position.

 

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

In this section you should put all relevant certifications. High tech certifications  should reflect relative technology such as SQL certifications and A+ or other recent Microsoft Certifications . You don’t want to put on your technical skills that you are certified in Basic or Windows 3.1 since that will show your age and lead to a decision based on age discrimination. Don’t add dates as to when you got these certifications for the same reasons as previously stated.  Professional Affiliations can be a double edged sword. It can be good or bad for the applicant. Keep clear of putting any affiliations or organizations that may inspire prejudice such as religious organizations. Organizations such as the Masons or the Lions Club probably are ok.

 

REFERENCES

Are references needed with your resume. That is a tough question which should be thought over very carefully. My advice would be unless this is a education resume such as a teacher that you do not send your resume with references. Especially if your sending it by email or by fax. You don’t want to have a book for a resume and too much will also will turnoff many employers. Recommendation letters can be given to the employer upon request. Make sure first that that any recommendation letter is a good reference before giving it to any potential employer. One other suggestion is that when ever you leave a job that you ask for a recommendation letter. This will act to counter any possible negative reference that you might get from that employer.

TECHNICAL CAREERS:

Technical Resumes have to be more specific than most resumes. Most recruiters and employers are looking for specific skills and experience. It is also reputed to have the most instances for age discrimination. So when you write your resume for a technical job it is essential that you get past all the essential hurtles for the position by following the advice I gave on the other sections especially use keywords, and only use relevant skills and experience.  Many times companies hire from  contracting companies that work for the large corporation. It may be more advantageous to apply to a contracting company that works at that large company. This may also be the best route if you a older employee and the chances of being hired by a large company diminishes. Contracting companies may be more amenable to hire that employee with more experience since no benefits are involved. Try and keep your resume experience if possible to the last 10 years .

SUGGESTED KEYWORDS:  Dreamweaver, MS FrontPage, SQL other recent web development languages and tools,  QA, Network or System Administrator, Security are others that are good.

 
 

EDUCATION CAREERS:

Teaching careers have always had the most specific skill oriented career.  As in technical careers age discrimination is also a issue. So when you write your resume for a teaching job it is essential that you get past all the essential hurtles for the position by following the advice I gave on the other sections especially use keywords, and only use relevant skills, certifications experience.  Try and keep your resume experience if possible to the last 15 years.  Teaching resumes should also include recommendation letters. This is the only field I would recommend sending recommendations. This is because there is less likely hood that the principal would call the previous principal and can speed up the hiring process.

SOME SUGGESTED KEYWORDS:  PRE-K, Math, Special Education, ESL, English as a Second Language, Science, Elementary.

 

GENERAL RESUMES:

General resumes are resumes with no real goal stated on the resume. No real specific job.  Such resumes are selling a potential employer on the applicant’s characteristics rather than their experiences. On these type of resumes use of keywords written through out the resume is extremely important. Emphasis of being a quick learner, independence , and being a team player is important.

SUGGESTED KEYWORDS: Fast Learner, Initiative, Dedicated, Team Player.

 

SALES RESUMES:

Sales resumes also need to show several aspects of the applicant to the employer. One of course the professional expertise of the applicant in sales. The second is dealing with what type of personality the potential employee has. This is to find out if he is a team player, independent, friendly, and good negotiator etc.

SUGGESTED KEYWORDS: Quota, Sales, Exceeded, Excellent Communication Skills, Contacts, Experience, Team Player.

Other types of resumes such as nursing resumes, teaching resumes, engineering resumes, and marketing resumes also have their own special keywords that you might want to add if you are creating one of these resumes.

   Video resumes are starting to become popular. This type of resume might sound very tempting , but this type of resume / CV can actually prevent you from getting a job. Here is a few reasons why.

  1. The video will show the employer what you look like. If the employer does not like how you look you won’t get hired.
  1. The employer will here how you sound, and how you think. If he does not like what he hears you will not get hired.
  1. You will not get a chance to defend yourself or try and sell yourself in person which will increase your chances of getting a job.

   Another thing you need to do is to watch out what you say on the internet and putting your name on the internet. Prospective employers may search the internet for your name in an attempt to find out what type of person you are and what type of politics you have. There is no sense in taking the chance avoid it if possible.
